Muirieston 21s 1

Drumchapel progressed into the last 32 of the Scottish cup but not without a scare from a well organised Muirieston outfit. The match started scrappy and a lot of possession was lost by both sets of players who would not have played much in the least few weeks due to the poor weather. Carlin had a good chance for Drumchapel early on but after cutting inside the last defender his effort was well saved by the keeper. Shortly after L Campbell had to make a smart stop to deny the visitors the lead after 10 minutes but it was Muirieston that opened the scoring. A long ball deceived Kerr who could only flick into the path of the forward who coolly rounded Campbell in goal before slotting home. This sparked the home side to try and drive forward but there was little luck in front of goal with poor finishing and good goalkeeping denying the forwards. Gilmartin had a couple of long range efforts that flew wide. Kenny then had a great chance at the near post but tried to use the outside of his boot to score when it may have been easier for someone else if he had found the right pass. Gilmartin had another header from a Carlin corner but this just missed the bar. Despite the few chances that were created the side from Livingston did defend well and gave the forwards little time on the ball while clearing their lines. The best chance of the half fell to Kenny around 6 yards out but his effort was straight at the keeper who saved well to deny the equaliser.

Half time saw a new belief in the Drumchapel side, maybe it was the Lucozade Sport that was consumed or maybe it was the Jim Hart rant, however it did take a short while to work. The opening period of the half was dominated by Drumchapel who continued to create half chances and not finish. Carlin should have scored within a couple of minutes but although he reacted well to a Smyth shot that was beaten down by the keeper, he couldn't connect properly with the ball as it was caught between his feet. The frustration was starting to show as first touches were poor and possession was easily given up, mainly due to the constant pressing from the visiting players. Gold came into the midfield and captain Gilmartin was pushed up front. After a great free-kick by Kelly, Gilmartin unleashed an unstoppable over-head kick into the far corner of the net. This drew a huge sign of relief and the Drum were now in search of the winning goal. Dick replacing McFarlane mean that Kelly could move further forward and it was his cross that again led to the next goal. Kearn Docherty managed to get the next goal, which is his first outfield goal from open play in over 2 years for the club. Kelly again played the ball to the back post, Smyth managed to direct the ball back into the centre for Docherty to stroke home. Shortly after this had gone in Muirieston pushed forward looking to level the match and at stages looked dangerous. The home side needed the third to kill the match. Gold had a shot deflected out for a corner and Carlin had another effort that just went wide from the right hand side. The next two goals were a little harsh on Muirieston but equally both were unstoppable. Gilmartin was first up from a wide position. After a quick glance he drilled the ball into the far top corner from a difficult angle to strongly compete against his other strike for goal of the match. Then shortly after Carlin scored from near the corner flag with the keeper deceived by the flight of the ball.

Drumchapel will be delighted to be in the next round of the Scottish Cup where they will face East Kilbride Burgh United. This match is scheduled to take place on Saturday 1st November at the Donald Dewar Centre with a 2pm kick off. The winner will be in the hat for the last 16.
