Drumchapel stormed back to winning ways with an excellent performance to send Neilston Juniors out of the Golden Goals Cup. With 2 new signings in the squad and another out with the flu, the squad was given a major boost with the new quality added. The home side started at a faster pace than recently and McEwan and Gold won the early midfield tussels. Pierce looked sharp up front and caused all sorts of probls with his pace and quick feet. Gallagher, looking to continue his good form was given a set-back after just 15 minutes as his ankle flared up. This provided the opportunity to give Kenny Marshall his debut as he partnered Pierce in attack. Shaw had the first chance for Drumchapel after getting on the es of a Pierce corner. The defender couldnt direct his header on target. The opening goal came from an unlikely source as Shaw intercepted around 30 yards from goal. He strode on a few paces before drilling the ball low into the corner of the net. The hosts didn't have to wait too long for their second after a superb build up was finnished off in excellent style by Ross Murphy, cutting in from the right and burying the ball past the keeper with his left. With the visitors electing to play just one up front, the Drumchapel defence saw a lot of the ball. Campbell was rarely tested but dealt with any cross-balls well and commanded his area. The ball was then fed to Docherty or Shaw and play begun from there. Marshall and Pierce linked up well with both comfortable to take the ball into their feet. Pierce then had his first opportunity at the back post from a great cross, but the striker couldn't find the target from a tight angle. Shortly before half time the home side felt they should have had a clear cut penalty when Pierce was bundled in the box. No decision was awarded, luckily for the defender who was the last man. McEwan almost mustered up an opportunity when he drove into the box. There were a number of defenders close by however and the chance was blocked.
The second half was played in much the same fashion as the opening period with Drumchapel seeing a lot of the ball at the back. Maxwell and Kerr defended solidly and worked the ball well from right to left. Kerrigan, who had a good first half continued this form into the second and showed his quality with excellent control and link up play. Despite the dominance, Drumchapel did require the third goal to completely kill off the game as a goal for the visitors would spur them on. Maxwell was lucky not to concede a soft penalty after a slight tug on Sinclairs shirt in the box. The referee waved play on and Neilston missed the shot wide of the target. Sinclair continued his protest and was sent off from the field. There was no way back for Neilston at this point, loosing arguably their best performer. Kerrigan had Drumchapels next chance, cutting in from the left and striking the ball powerfully, the ball was blocked to safety. Kelly replaced Murphy to play on the left with Kerrigan moving to the right. Pierce then managed to get the clinching third goal after a decent through ball sent him clear on the right. The clubs top scorer drilled the ball low into the corner of the net. It wasn't long before the fourth goal spilled in. Pierce hit a powerful strike from 25 yards that unfortunately slipped through the young keepers hands into the net. M Docherty replaced his cousin K Docherty and was called in to make a few well timed tackles straight away around the edge of his area. Kelly then linked up well with Marshall who strode into the box. The debutant couldn't match his run with a goal as he curled the ball just past the far post. In a similar position moments later Marshall elected to power the ball on target, only to see his effort blocked by the keeper. Pierce was first to react and fed Marshall again, the defender caught him late as he tumbled to the floor but again no penalty was awarded. McEwan had the last chance of the game. The midfielder was fed the ball at the edge of the area and his first time effort was heading for the net but was well blocked by the defence. Drumchapel put in a timely performance to get their season back on track and will now attept to aw back the points in the league to put pressure on their rivals.
